President's Volley 2010

Monday, April 05, 2010

With the spring-like balmy conditions leading up to the Easter weekend, we were able to have the nets put up earlier than any year in recent memory. We hope it bodes well for the coming season. The Club has a full schedule of tennis and social events again this year along with some new wrinkles (no, that is not a senior’s pun). On Opening Day, Saturday, April 17, we invite all returning members and prospective new members to come down to turn in their completed application forms and play some tennis once the windscreens have been put up. Help with the physical job of installing the windscreens is always needed and appreciated. This all takes place between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. In March, we distributed a survey to help us better gauge what the membership would like to have. We were very pleased with the feedback – well over 50% of the membership responded. The resulting was information used to develop this season’s program. Thanks to all of you who responded! For adult members we will have: - Monday and Wednesday adult doubles, starting May 17 and May 19. respectively. This continues to be a core activity of the club - Saturday morning competitive, starting May 29, 10:00 to noon, every Saturday. - Other tournaments and Round Robins throughout the season. - Adult lessons starting Tuesday, May 18. Our Junior program has been expanded considerably. Once again we will provide first-rate instruction and on-court time with the Tuesday series of six one-hour lessons starting May 18. In the summer, we partner with the Parks and Recreation Dept. to run five weeklong tennis camps. The summer camps are a great opportunity for young players to follow up the lessons with more court time under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Ken Crosina and his staff at the Campus Tennis Centre in Oshawa provide all our instructors. We are very excited to announce more junior events this year: - Sunday Junior Competitive tennis starting June 27, 10:00 to noon. The year will finish on August 29 with a year-end Junior Tournament. - Tuesday Junior Clinics start June 29, after the Tuesday lessons are finished. - Two weeks of junior clinics at the end of July and beginning of August - We are also promoting Free Junior Thursdays every Thursday in May and June. All of this will take place under the supervision of tennis teaching pros. Please refer to the Calendar of Events in our Newsletter for dates. The Club’s application form will indicate where a cost is involved. Applications for the summer camps will be available from the Rec. Centre later in the spring. New this year is the practice hitting board, which will be mounted on the east wall of the Rec. Centre. The “blue monster” should be up by the end of April. Thanks goes out to Spencer Main for promoting this addition. The “official” start of the social season is the Annual Family Barbecue on Saturday, June 12. This is a great way to meet the new members and renew old acquaintances. Juniors and their parents and our badminton members are all welcome. For badminton players in the fall and winter, we have adult and junior nights. Adults play on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10:00 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we run an excellent junior program under the direction of Jolyon Thompson. A number of our juniors have gone on from this program to distinguish themselves in tournaments outside our area. To close out the year we are changing our format from a dinner/dance to an informal Cocktail Evening on Saturday, September 11. Our gracious host will be Young Mee Kim. Our Annual General Meeting will be on Thursday, October 28 at 7:30 pm at the Rec. Centre. And don’t forget to check out our web site, www.porthoperacquetclub.com. The site promises to be much improved by providing up to date information on what is happening. You can download application forms and the Newsletter, see photos of some of our activities, and check the schedule for upcoming events. See you on the courts!
